So Wizards of the coast have released a 3D Magic: The Gathering Game. I checked out (briefly) the Duels of the Planeswalkers demo on XBL this evening and was actually rather impressed. Its basically a 3D version of the actual Magic card game. The advantage is obviously you don’t have to go out and buy a set deck and it also look like it has a Multiplayer built in so you can play again a friend.
For those of you not familiar with Magic: The Gathering, its a trading card game in which you play the role of a planeswalker – a very powerful Mage capable of moving though the various dimensions of the Multiverse (Magical Universe). There are 5 main colours of Magic and the trading card games allow you to either specialise or diversify (I’m not sure about the 360 game yet though).
It does have a full campaign mode and it does look rather good. There is a very intense tutorial session as well which quickly but simply runs through the basics of the game.
So what’s in it for Magic veterans? Well, for someone like me who has been playing Magic for a while but is still unfamiliar with the more intricate rules of the games, there is a lot to learn. There is also some excellent artwork and some great cards.
Duels of the Planeswalkers costs 800 of those elusive XBox live points, and is available for download now!
