Featuriffic vs Minimalist

Every time I think about a re-design of the blog I fight an internal battle between a straightforward and simple layout and a cool ‘hacker-like’ theme, filled with transparencies and cool images. I’ve always enjoyed the so-called Fantasy User Interfaces you see on TV on shows like CSI and 24 and in movies like Die Hard 4 which are full of swift animations, sleek window design and overall damned good looks. (Check out Mark Coleran’s work)

On the flipside, when it comes to blogging the key focus is the writing, and smooth minimalist designs that really bring the focus back to the text can be very attractive. So when I chose my current theme, I thought I was getting a mixture of both. An interesting and eye catching design but with a clean and straightforward layout for the posts. But it took me a while to settle on a theme, and even now I’m not particular sure I like it. So I thought I would give you a look into the themes I narrowed it down to.

The Minimalist

Surprisingly, a large proportion of my choices were in this area. I think its hard because at times I want my site to be a full featured site, with daily updates full of interesting news and articles collected from all over the web. Conversely, I have no time to do any of that and my site reverts to a standard blog, and the minimalist themes suit that style of writing better.

Elegant Grunge

Besides having a cool name, this theme offered a nice blend of dark and light. I love charcoal greys and really thought the contract of the header and body was attractive. What I didn’t like was the way it tended to mangle my tweets on the right hand side, and the lack of justification in the sidebar made it feel untidy and distracting.

Simple Dark

Another elegant theme, the dark gradient really appealed to me, as did the better separation of the twitter posts, making it much easier on the eyes. I only steered clear of this one as I often use dark themes and wanted to go for something with lighter colours.

Margot

Another neat theme with a good contrast between light and dark. Once again however, the lack of support for my Twitter feed caused me to toss this one aside. The design is very smooth however, and very much appeals to me if I were just reading/writing posts.

The Pretty

These few themes were ones that I found visually attractive. I actually have a lot more, but I am trying to move away from this sort of style and into something a bit cleaner and more professional.

Motion

Motion is a beautiful theme to look at, incorporating transparent bars and a futuristic background along with a clearly separated sidebar area. However, it’s almost a little too distracting and really takes away from the posts themselves. In this case, eye candy isn’t everything.

Game Site

Game site is a theme designed for news and articles. It was originally made for games but can be used along with wordpress categories to create a fully integrated platform, with featured posts, thumbed posts, javascript and ajax functionality. However, in order to do all that considerable time must be spent in configuration along with graphics design and implementation. Far too much work for me…

The Blend

These are the themes that I felt had a nice mix of simplistic layouts but pleasing to look at as well.

White Gold

This theme uses a 3 column layout – something I normally don’t like, but its blend of colours and slight 3D looks from the shadows makes it feel very natural. When it comes to reading, the layout is simple and concise although it doesn’t seem to like line breaks in text. For someone like me who loves paragraphs as a way to break up subjects or topics, it was a major downside to an otherwise great theme.

Desk Scape

Perhaps by the time you are reading this the above theme is how my site looks. This is because Desk Scape is the one other theme that I would really consider sticking with.  It’s layout is clean and simple with great use of layers. The one problem that turned me away from this theme is the post summarising which occurs beneath the most recent post. As I would be moving towards a blog, this would be one feature that I think would decrease readability and flow.

zeePersonal & zeeSynergie

Both these themes have a nice clean feel to them and each provides an easy to read post. One thing that I really don’t like about them however is their use of the categories as a sidebar, and difficulty in making them a top bar. However as simple but attractive layouts go, these two are pretty good.

So there you have it. My current theme was the best out of this bunch although there are still plenty out there if I ever feel the need to change. What do you think? Drop me a comment (top right) and let me know!

A new look

So the themes have been switching around a bit lately which is mainly due to my standard theme Mystique being updated by its developers. This caused an untold amount of annoyance becuase they changed everything and I admittidly didn’t read the change log and assumed it was a minor update.

Given that, I have finally settled on a new theme. It took me a while to choose but I’m pretty happy with the results. More on that tomorrow though.

Additionally, you might notice that we no longer have a logo. This is a temporary situation while I interface with my graphical consultants and decide where to go next with it. Let me know if you have any thoughts! The comments link is on the top right!

Motivation and Inspiration

It’s interesting how I find motivation at the oddest times.

Usually I’m motivated in the evenings, with thoughts moving around in my head after a nice dinner and a chance to relax. Lately though that hasn’t been the case at all. I thought I would welcome the regularity to my life that routine would bring but so far all it’s doing is draining me.

I get up about 6.45am. Wash, have breakfast (assuming I have milk, I do never seen to have enough) brust my teeth and leave. I catch the 7.49 metro to Gare Centrale where I get on the oldest, roughest train in all of Brussels and ride it rather slowly to Diegem. Thankfully the company pays for this as two weeks of tickets cost me €57.20 (expenses for the win). We study from 9am to 5.30pm and I go home, shop if I need anything, make dinner and then get back to studying. Sleep come after that (although not easily given the heat) and the process repeats again.

There is no time to be inspired to do anything but study and even then, that’s hard enough after a fully day of it. My motivation levels since I started here have just tailed off, although I’m not the only one experiencing this. So I find it odd that I’m sitting here at 9.30am in a classroom, listening to our (awesome) trainer teaching about Inter VLAN routing and I felt the urge to write something. It also kinda allowed me to show that I haven’t been lazy with updates, I’ve just been really busy/tired.

And don’t think I’m not paying attention either – writing seems to flow off the top of my head when I really want to write and I can listen at the same time. Rather odd.. but my understanding of VLANs is much better now. I think its a throwback from uni days of writing notes while still listening to the lecturer.

So, I’ll make a real effort to keep blogging or even just writing over the next few weeks. Don’t always expect blogs!

See, aye, ess, see, oh.

So a full week of work is over and I am absolutely exhausted. The scary thing is – this was an easy week.

So Cisco Systems Inc. You have probably heard of them and never even realised it. Ever bought a Linksys wireless router? Or a Flip HD cam? BOOM! Cisco owns them all. In fact, Cisco was one of the few companies that made a name for itself by buying hundreds of smaller companies.

Diegem in Brussels is the home of one of their technical support teams as well as HR and other function, and I am here to be systematically broken down and rebuilt into some sort of networking expert, whereby I will take on a consultantish sort of role. All very clear….

What is clear is that over the next 90 days I will study more than I probably ever have before and all being well will complete five certifications - CCNA, CCNP Route, CCNP Switch, CCNP Troubleshooting and CCIE Written. And in 7 months if I ignore any hint of social life I could achieve a CCIE…but that’s optimistic at its best.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday really focused on getting to know the company, getting set up with IT and learning a bit about the structure of support and what was expected from us over the course of the program. We also got a tour of the site, the labs onsite (two floors just filled with routers and switches) and shown equipment we could use if we needed to.

Thursday and Friday were a little bit different as they focused on team building and self improvement. So we did team exercises, embarrassed ourselves in front of each other and then ran through some personality tests to get to know ourselves and each other a little better (surprisingly accurate).

Meanwhile, in the evenings I have been running through the CCENT CBT Nuggets program in the hope of getting a head start on the CCNA material which we start to cover on Tuesday. So that’s really what I’ll be doing over the next two weeks.

Other cool things about the job include the canteen (Steak everyday for €5.50), the site itself (surprisingly pretty) and having an @cisco.com email address – up there with the likes of @intel.com (which I’ve also had).

So that about it for me from today, but I’ll try a be a tad more regular over the incoming weeks!

All I want is a decent cuppa!

So the water here in Brussels is a tad hard…I assume the taps have filters and the like but it doesn’t seem to aid the making of a good cup of tea. I really miss that. Additionally, I have the most random kettle in the world. Below is a picture of said kettle:

It has no auto stop function, so I can’t put it on and dander around the apartment doing other things carefree – I have to listen to it, and when it is boiling I have to go and unplug it…

Overall though, life here in Brussels isn’t that bad. I’m sleeping properly now which really helps although getting out of bed in the morning does seem to be a problem – hopefully one that will be solved with work tomorrow morning. Google Maps really has been my saviour these past few days – it know’s all the times of the metro’s and the buses and can even tell you when to jump stops – has been so useful in getting around the place.

I still have to register with my local municipality. In Brussels, instead of registering at the town hall (can you imagine the nightmare that would be with everyone that lives in Brussels) the city is split off into municipalities by their postcode group. I’m in 1200, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, so I have to register down the road. But other than that I am officially moved in.

Really glad I had this week to settle myself and get started on some of the work. Everything I’ve read so far has made sense and it looks like at CCNP or CCIE they might introduce PSK (Phase Shift Keying) and FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) as communication methods which means my dregree might actuall come in useful for the later stuff!

I also came across a comic book shop right down the road from my apartment, opposite the shopping mall here. This is a picture of Legion in French. It’s a shame that all the comics are in French, but I think they might sell Magic The Gathering cards which are in English.

I’ve also had the chance to go out with some of the guys (and girls) I’ll be working with this year, which has been great fun. Last night we went to a bar with 2500 different beers although I must admit, I was too tired to try any, but I did order a glass of Kasteel Red, which turned out to be cherry flavoured and unlike many fruit beers, not overly sweet. It was also 8% proof…

The bar itself was a lot like Katy Daily’s at home, especially in both the atmosphere, decor and music, although it was 3 floors and quite a bit larger. I only had my phone with me but I got some shots which you can check out below! The overflowing beer was the end of a keg but that glass is 2 litres…
